The news just gets better. Searching for 'speedstep linux' from google
found a number of links including this one:

versions (not 500MHz) of these have "SpeedStep technology". SpeedStep
changes the CPU frequency to save power. I have received mail from
SpeedStep owners indicating that their machines are SpeedStepping just
fine. Linux starting at version 2.2.15pre19 supports SpeedStep
officially. You should upgrade to 2.2.16 if you have a SpeedStep CPU. "
So, I guess I'll go with the 650. :)
