[ale] linux m$ access db server solution ?

Buggz,

Depending on structure of the Acce$$ host database and the demands of the
Acce$$ clients, it is possible for Windoze workstations with the correct
driver installed (see
http://www.jepstone.net/directory/index.cgi/Databases/APIs/ODBC/ODBC_Drivers
) to access your Linux-based database server.

The bottom line is that databases like PostgreSQL can handle the back end,
but if the Acce$$ clients use M$ Access ODBC driver-specific tricks then
things are going to be a bit difficult for you.

The problem is having the microsoft client access the Linux database. I
don't think you can get there. Although painful, you can build a web based
client interface with Perl, Cold Fusioin, or PHP.

ODBC is a protocol that lets various clients access various servers.
PostgreSQL and MySql have ODBC access. It is generally possible to dump
from one DBMS and then input the dump, with proper field massaging into
another DBMS. It is not, however, a trivial task unless the data size is
small and well defined.

M$ access supports ODBC. So it is quite possible to have a Linux
MySQL/PostgreSQL backend server. You will need to get the specific ODBC
interface driver for the specific server you chose.
