[ale] Where can I find...?

I am looking for a resource (book, HOW-TO, online, or other) that can
help with the following:

I am going to do a custom kernel for my firewall and bring it up-to-date
with ipchains. I currently am using a LRP floppy. I have several small
(<500M) drives gathering dust and will put it on one of those. What I
need is info on exactly what files, libraries, includes, shell, etc..
are absolutely essential for the operation of a basic kernel with
networking, a bash shell and ipchains. I will compile the kernel on my
developement box and copy the files over. I am trying to keep the files
on the firewall to a minimum. I know what files to add for certain
additional apps, like SSH, but don't know where to find the info on what
the system won't boot without. Any help on where to start looking would
be appreciated.
