[ale] Problems with APM

Hello all!  I'm fairly new to the group, been to a couple meetings, it's
been interesting so far...

Yesterday I built a 2.4.5 kernel patched for XFS, and everything went fine
until the first time the APM BIOS suspended the system.  When I try to
resume, the screen remains black and the computer beeps incessantly.  This
happens regardless of whether I am in X or at a virtual console, and it
happens only with my 2.4.5 kernel.  All kernels get identical options from
lilo, including 'apm=1'.  Here are the results of greping the config files
of a prebuilt XFS kernel vs. my kernel for 'APM'.  As you can see, the only
differences are CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT, which I've tried changing, and the
new option CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF, which I don't think should affect
this.

What else should I be looking at?  Maybe something else is broken (e.g., gcc
or libc)?  I'm running Mandrake 7.2...
