In the source tree there's all kinds of docs.  Start by reading
/usr/src/linux/README . This will get you going on what you need to
compile your kernel.

I highly suggest you take advantage of LILO and provide options in
/etc/lilo.conf to boot your new kernel as well as your old.  Also,
create a boot floppy for your current kernel.
