I saw and talk to Miguel at OLS last week... He's got it under control
.NET just makes it easy for everyone to deal. 

And as far as using passport there are several efforts to recreate that
functionality and you don't have to use winXX to run passport software,
IIRC there is an free software module for apache to do this. 

Less FUD and more code.
