[ale] X server permissions

could it be that the xterm-executable is not in your path?
when you start the terminal as root what form of "terminal" runs.
xterm?
dtterm?
aterm?
Eterm?
xiterm?
,
,
,
once you've know this do a search for it.
see if your distribution has it in /bin, /usr/bin......... or where ever.
add this to your path in your shell .profile.
