I see what you mean, but why does it say "Track 01: 136 of 639 MB written"?
The actual size of the ISO (as shown by ls -l) is 639MB. Where is the 734MB
coming from?

I'm a little concerned that part of my problem might be a
only-marginally-supported SCSI card (SIIG AP-10). When I tar to tape, the
drive runs over and over the same place indefinitely if I use the W (verify)
option. In fact, the "urrrrrrrrp...shweeerp...urrrrrrrrp" didn't stop until
the SCSI card was reset on boot-up.

Also: In my struggles last night, I tried to see how the CD-RW drive did
regarding reading. The first thing I tried was

	dd if=/dev/cdrom of=test.iso

and the machine locked up solid immediately thereafter (frozen display,
mouse ptr). I then tried the more conventional mounting and cp -a and it
did fine, except there were moments where everything froze up for up to ~20
seconds while big files were moving (it recovered and did complete).

Can anyone recommend a cheap narrow PCI SCSI card that simply never has
"issues" in Linux - never, ever??
