[ale] xterm weirdness

I had the same problem. My solution was to add the "noaccel" option to 
the XF86Config line and then everything was happy. Annoying though because this
chipset is dead-dog slow when doing 16bit color at 1152x864. My 2MB PCI S3Virge
video card was faster than this is!
