[ale] Bus Error blather

"Bus Error" is a big catch-all with little useful meaning, at least in my
opinion.  In my mind I usually thing "Seg Fault."

For example, at some point in my past, the following code generated a "bus
error" under AIX:

  double foo ;
  scanf("%f",&foo) ;

unless you replaced the above with "%lf."  Works fine (I recall) under
Linux. YMMV
