[ale] Checking an active disk

Is there anyway to test a harddrive's integrity w/o taking a machine
offline?  I have a webserver which I suspect is experiencing some drive
problems:

   "File zzzzz exists but cannot be stat-ed: Input/Output error"

Is there a way to test/fix this drive w/o taking the server into single
user mode?
