The pointtopoint option of the ifconfig command is your friend!

ifconfig eth0 209.187.161.xxx pointopoint 209.186.12.1

Charter did some strange stuff to me. my IP is 209.187.161.xxx, my gateway
is 209.186.12.1  go figure.  I had to add a static route to my gateway in
order for things to work.  I would check route first, make sure your default
gateway is in there, and make sure there is a route to it...
