It's probably access permissions.  When I tried that here, I get in
/var/log/gdm/:0.log

See how the attempt to run xscreensaver was rejected?  I'm assuming that's
because of the way gdm starts as one user (root), then switches to another
(gdm).  Maybe if you play su games?
