The best place to find out about Linux is probably the Linux Documentation
project web site http://www.linuxdoc.org
I believe a good document to start with would be the
"Linux Frequently Asked Questions With Answers"
The direct URL for that would be:

That said I believe many folks on this list would tell you the best
way to find out the info you would need for your assignment would
be to either install Linux or set down in front of an existing Linux
system and get familiar with it first hand.
