[ale] Setup & XConfigurator broken in my RedHat system...

I've got a laptop running RedHat 6.2 which got shutdown unexpectedly.
When I brought the system up there were disk file errors which fsck
finally corrected, or so I thought. Since then, whenever I run the
RedHat utilities setup or Xconfigurator, console control completely dies
for that session. I can switch to another session and kill it but now I
can't get things working right again. Also, those programs are taking up
about 98% of the cpu time when they "lock up".
I tried a custom install and selected all the major system components
hoping that it woud fix my problem to no avail. I don't want to have to
completely rebuild my system but I don't know how to fix this problem.
Does anyone know what's being called by these programs that could be
corrupted? Is it possible that some devices in /dev have failed that can
be detected? I can't diagnose what the real problem is unfortunately.
Appreciate any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this problem,
Ben Scherrey
