[ale] X windows woes

I am trying to run x windows from a remote client.  I know that my client 
works because I can connect to other Unix boxes just fine.

When I try to connect to my RedHat 6.0 box, it fails.  My xwindows client 
will find the linux box with an XDMCP broadcast.  Instead of the normal 
response from the other unix boxes showing connected users, load, etc, 
linux only reports gnome...

When I try to connect to the linux box (either through the broadcast or 
direct), it fails telling me to make sure that an xdm program is running on 
the host.

The only way that I have been able to fix this problem is by installing as 
a server.  This last time, I installed custom.  I am booting into run level 
5.  I can also use xwindows locally.

Any ideas????
