[ale] Color maps in X

I am not going to pretend to know the first thing about color mapping.
However, I have a problem with a piece of plotting software I am trying
to run under Linux (standard RH 6 install with Gnome and
Enlightenment). When I load the software if gives me a warning message
saying, "Warning: Default visual will not allow changeable color map".
Because of this, I can not get multiple colors in my contour plots at
home. However, at work running IRIX, I dont have this problem (unless I
load two instances of the software). I really don't understand what it
means for a piece of software to "take" colors, but I guess something is
doing this on my Linux box (maybe Enlightenment?). Am I simply running
out of memory (16MB on my video card, 128MB main)? I have tried using
different color settings (8b, 16b, 24b, 32b) in my X configuration.
None of these seem to work. In fact if I use 8b, the program won't even
load. If someone can explain the possible reasons (or a solution) for
this, it would be a big help!

Thanks,

Justin
