[ale] Backup problems

If I open a xxx.tar.gz file that I've downloaded, WinZip opens it just
fine. If I try one that I've created, I can open the .gz part and see the
.tar file inside. When I tell it to open the .tar file, it hammers the
disk for awhile, then tells me it's an invalid file. Does this point to
the .tar part, or could it still be the .gz part? Also, I need to exclude
the /mnt/* tree to prevent a loop! Will adding something like "--exclude
/mnt" to the end of the command work?
BTW, I will try your suggestion.
