CompUSA has been selling some 40x EIDE CD-ROMs for about $45. I bought
one against the advice of list lurker (Neil you have been identified).
As it turns out, its the best CD-ROM I ever bought. The drive tray
slides in and out very smoothly, it works fast and is very quiet. It
came in a pretty generic white box with a big blue and orange sticker
that says "40X MAX". Here's the specs from the box:

EIDE (requires UDMA support)
Built-in buffer
2,400-6,000 KB/S max
Mode 1
Mode 2(form 1, form 2)
CD-XA
Video CD
CD-1
CD-RW
Mulitsession PhotoCD
I-Trax CD
Power Tray
Brushless
Headphone Jack, Volumn Control
Power eject button
50,000 power on hours.
