[ale] Linux & isa modem

ALE-

A bolt of lightning hit across the street, and since then my modem doesnt
work.  When I try and dial, I get this feedback in /var/log/messages:

<normal pppd chat params>
expect (OK)
^M

..the modem then hangs.  I've tried a few different modems in the same box,
even different ISA slots.  Does this sound like a hardware problem?
