What kind of card do you have (ie 3com, NE2000, Intel
EtherExpress, etc.) Also, will this card be the only network card in your
machine, or one of two, three, etc?
To begin to answer your question though, the usual procedure for
installing a new network card is to identify the card's type (3com,
NE2000, etc), compile the driver for that card into your kernel (or as a
module), then assign an IP address to the card. I personally like to use
the "linuxconf" program for the IP assigning part.
