I've been with Linux now for a couple of years. I've tried RedHat, Caldera and
SuSE.

Personally I didn't like RedHat at all but I've heard many recommend it for
first timers with a future migration to another distro. Caldera remains my
favorite as a workstation distro but the last release is starting to show a
divergence from what one may call a typical distro. I found SuSE to be a very
stable distro but had to much of a European touch for me.

Personally I think you should try several distros to find the one that's right
for you. There are several books that come with 2 or 3 distros that will help
you get started and give you several to try to get a feel for the different
distros.
