I beleieve there are already apps written for linux that do just that. I know I have a standard sniffer that I run on linux and I also run MRTG on all of my layer 2 and layer 3 switches. (Gives a very nice graphical representation of bandwidth utilization...not just of ports but also of entire backplanes)

A very good site to have bookmarked is http://linux.box.sk From there they have just about any info and links to veraious software you could need!

Firstly, my thanks to all for the Perl tip. The script is working like a
champ here.

There is some debate going on here at work as to our network flow and how
much of what type of packet(s) accounts for out traffic. Rather than
continue to listen to the debate, I would like to do an analysis of our
network traffic.

I would like to know if anyone has successfully used Linux and an analysis
program to do this kind of work. If they have, I would greatly appreciate
the program name and any setup tips.

Regards - Bob Kruger
