You can customize the prompt any way you like. The prompt for all users
can be set in '/etc/profile' (for bash). Look for a line that looks like
PS1='\u@\h:\$' or something like that. Set the PS1 variable to whatever
you want and that is wat your prompt will be. here is a list of some
escape codes:
\u username
\h hostname
\w directory
\@ time
\W more verbose directory
\n newline
more are in the bash man page

That sounds like an X server problem. Make sure you have X set up
correctly for your card and monitor.

Try giving it a few seconds. It can be set up to be less verbose when
rebooting. If that is the case, it is rebooting and you just don't see
it. 'shutdown -r now' will always work if you are the root user.

run netconf. There is a section in this configuration tool for PPP/SLIP
connections

For you I would recommend Debian. It's more hackerish like slackware but
it stays up-to-date with other distros for the most part.
