I don't know about other people, but going through a lot of books was
the way for me. I started with Laura Lemay's "Teach Yourself Java In 21
Days". That got me just the basics of the language. After that, I went
after 2 books on JDBC, followed by 3 books on networking. I also have a
couple in JavaBeans, but I haven't read them yet. No one book or course
will tell you everything you need to know to write even a small but
useful application. I recommend starting with Laura. She's good, but
you still may have to read her several times before you get some
topics. Other topics will come easy to a C++ programmer.
