[ale] Can't get above 8bpp in RedHat 5.2

You have to have a video mode defined for the higher bits per pixel.
If you don't have a mode definition listed in the DISPLAY subsection
for the 16 depth, there is nothing to switch to.

For instance I have:

  SubSection "Display"
      Depth        16
      Modes        "1024x768"
   EndSubSection

as part of my XF86Config file
