[ale] question about new so-dimm memory modules

I am researching laptops on which to load Linux.

I have noticed that most new notebooks (as they seem to be called now) have two
144 pin so-dimm slots.

In these slots you can usually load 32 MB, 64 MB or even 128 MB sodimms. Now
that 256 MB sodimms are available, does that mean you could put 512 MB in? The
specs seem to indicate that most motherboards (at least the desktop) can
support addressing of 1 GB of RAM. Can the notebook motherboards also address 1
GB also?

Thanks.
