[ale] Turning on my zip drive?

Ok,
  This laptop doesn't doesn't appear to like me building it a new kernel.  
Every combination I've done so far just reboots after about 10 dots after
I tell it to boot.  I have no network support so I can't ftp in a new 
kernel and I need a new floppy.  I do have a Zip+ which I can use to copy 
from my other computer.  The only problem is I can't access my Zip drive.
If I do an "insmod ppa" it says the device is already in use and that's 
about it.

  Anyone know what order I need to load the modules in so that I can 
access my zip?
