hi guys,
please help us in this problem.
we installed RH linux. we didnt knew it comes with apache installed. (
still iam not sure ). we downloaded the apache (1.3.9)source and compiled it
and installed it at the default directory /usr/local/apache. we started the
service and it was running ok. we then downloaded the tar & installed the
IBM WebSphere. it installed the IBM webSPhere core and web sphere apache
plug in.
Q1. can somebody explain whats this plug in is and whats it for.
after installing the Websphere, we started accessing the files in websphere
docs it were not accessible and i chganged the apache config to set an alias
and finally got the documentation files. we tried to run the Servlets it was
not running. after sometime we realised that there are two copies of apache
on the m/c one at /etc and one at /usr/local. we know we installed at
/usr/local. i was wondering about the /etc copy and thought the plug in
installed had done something. but so long we was working with the apache
server run from the /usr/local directory. we stopped that and tried the /etc
copy of web server. then we realised the config files were also seperately
there and we were so long working with /usr/ copies. the webserver installed
and plugin installed update the /etc confi copies. after running the /etc
copy of the web server everything was working fine and the servlets were
also working.
Q2. can somebody tell me how there are two copies. is the /etc copy the
one that comes with RH linux or what. why did apache didnt find that a
version is already installed. please pardon my question. iam a regular
windows user. so i ask these silly questions.
this all done yesterday and today morning...
we wanted to remove the newly installed apache server and wanted to use the
original one in /etc. we could not find how to UNINSTALL the apache that i
installed ( not the one in /etc ).
Q3. How to UnInstall the compiled/installed apache webserver.
we decided to delete the /usr/local/apache directory and did the same. we
wanted to make sure the websphere works fine.
when we tested for servlets today, they were not running. we are trying
for alomost for 2 hrs with no use. html pages are server. the servlets are
not running.
http://x.y.z.w/servlet/SimpleServlet
this says the SimpleServlet servlet class not found. we know this has got
something to do with environment and path settings. can somebody help us.
when we checked the websphere admin settings for java engine the settings
are all showing something irrelevent like c:\jdk1.222 etc. whereas our jdk
is in /usr/jdk118. so we wonder what the problem is.
Q4. now, should i use the original apache server 1.3.6 or install thee new
one i downloaded 1.3.9. how to upgrade it, instead making of making a
mistake again to instal in seperately.
SOMEBODY PLEASE GUIDE US. PLEASE PARDON OUR LONG MAIL.
I WANTED TO EXPLAIN THE WHOLE SCENARIO SO THAT U GET IT BETTER.
ANY KIND OF HELP IS APPRECIATED FROM THE HEART.
thanks,
sudhar
