That is true. However, it is VERY VERY important to read the
linux/Documentation/Changes file and ensure that you have the
correct versions of all the relevant software, some of which
you will almost certainly have to compile yourself, especially
when you're in 2.<odd> land.

Furthermore, it is not always obvious exactly how to go about
doing all of the upgrading activity. It's usually best to
build the new kernel so you can boot it and compile stuff;
then build all the necessary new software under the new
kernel. Sometimes it's not possible to do that; often
in such cases binaries are available (binutils, for example),
but sometimes you need to boot the old kernel to build
a new version of something you need to get the new kernel
to work. And when things like "make" or "rpm" or "ld.so"
get broken by the kernel upgrade (all of those have happened
in the past) it becomes a real adventure. Doing an upgrade
properly by hand from, say, 2.0.x to 2.2.x, is a *lot* of
work (but very educational).

But I suspect Mr. Fowler knows all this; he's been on this
list for at least 4 years, IIRC...
