Well, root is allowed to nice programs to "negative" priorities.
My experience is that this doesn't necessarily help much, unless
you really do have another "full-time" process continually running
and demanding system respources, besides VMWare.

I run VMWare on a 160Mb PII-366 notebook.  I have found 2 things that
have increased performance:

- increase the amount of "virtual memory" that VMWare will allocate to
Windows.  I noticed some improvement when increasing it from 48Mb
to 64 Mb (with Win98).  

- I also noticed a definite improvement in response time (especially booting
up Win98, which takes a long time in VMWare) when I upgraded to version 1.1.
