As I noted in an earlier post, the way I got around this was to set:

security = server
server = MYNTBOX

in the smb.conf file.  There is another solution and it's documented on
the samba web site.  I've not attempted it, as I believe it requires a
recompile of Samba.  It has something to do with using encrypted
passwords.  Someone else posted this solution to the list.  You might
check the archives..
