I think that most newer monitors (post 1995 or so -- most of the 'green'
monitors) have safeguards in them that will cause the monitor to shut
off if it is fed an out-of-range signal.  Chris- I know the monitors you
use at IFS will do this.  On the other hand, if you have an older
monitor (as I do) then you can easily damage it by overdriving.  This is
a hazard under any OS if your monitor is not plug-n-pray.
