Great! Glad you got it working.

What I'd do is have a shell script that started quake.  In it, add the following line:

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/libc5-directory:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Where libc5-directory has all the libc5 libs.

That will have the libc5 available (first in the path) for quake only, but won't put it in
your ld.so list, so X won't break.  There is a little ambiguity as to whether or not this
will work: you say that "Quake2 needs that libc[5]".  If that's the case, then you'll be
golden with this shell script.  If what is really happening is "Quake2 needs the X
libraries that work with libc5" you may be screwed.
