Try this:
/sbin/ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/X
That should tell you what libraries are being loaded by your X server. If it says
"not found" on any of them, or if they are not what you expect, then add or change
your ld.so.conf to find the correct ones.
Personally, I think what you have is either a ELM/A.OUT or a libc4/libc5 or a
libc5/gnulibc conflict in that you probably have more than one installed. If you're
loading the wrong one, and you can't get ld.so.conf to find the right one, try
renaming one of them so it won't be found (libX11 is ONLY used by X, so it won't be
missed).
As far as which one to use, I don't know which libc you're using. If its a libc4
system, and you're using a libc5 library, you will get the errors you mention.
