Each piece of hardware in the system must be recognized by the kernel
before it can be used.  Kernels provided with Slackware usually have
most of the popular net cards compiled into the kernel.  RedHat follows
a different path -- they include loadable modules for each of the net
cards.  You have to get the right module loading before ifconfig or
route will have any effect.  If you're using RedHat 5, I think there
is a sysadmin menu that will walk you through both the module and the
ifconfig/route details.  Ifconfig and route will not help until one
of your boot messages says:
eth0: brand x model y on int z io: 0xwhatever.
