It's in a faq somewhere...  You type "echo ^V^C"  that's CRTL-V CRTL-C
most modern distributions include a shell script called "reset" to do
this for you.  
As to why it happens...  it has to do with what the terminal thinks are
escape sequences in the binary file it's reading.
