[ale] mac backup over netatalk??

'Newbie' question...

Does anyone out there have a mac backup going over netatalk, ie., a
successful network configuration where one or more macs are backed up onto
a tape drive on a linux box?

I have a program called "suntar" that needs an "rexec" daemon to accept
"rmt" connections, and though I do have "exec" services listed in my
/etc/services, I do not have "rexec" or anything like it running. (There
is a program called "in.rexecd" in my /sbin directory--from Redhat--but I
have NO idea how to use it.)

Is this the proper way to do this? Is it even possible using linux? Does
anyone have a better way? (What I'd really like, of course, is a nice
cron line on my linux box to run nightly, rather than have to play with
the Mac each time. But I'll take what I can get!)

Thank you for any help you can offer!!
