[ale] Screwed up machine.

Does anyone have any Ideas about the machine I mentioned?  The one where
it hangs durring boot up durring the partition check?  I need to get
this working for a friend of mine.  I have tried kernels 1.3.8x and
1.3.9x (currently trying 97).
