I'm setting a friend up with linux and have hit a problem.

I am making a kernel for a friend on his P66.  It has an Adaptec 2940
controller that I know for a fact is good and 3 scsi Drives (one IDE).
When we build the kernel (it goes clean) I install it (as a backup
kernel, saving the good one) it gets to the partition check and then
just stops.  It does either 1,2 or 3 and ends with something like:

Partition Check:
sda: sda1
sdb: sdb1
sdc:

and stops there.  I've let it sit an hour one time and still nothing.
Anyone got an Idea?
