I found the solution and thought I'd share it for those who may need it.

Mgetty was sending a string of Hayes compatible commands to the
BitSurfer. I had to start from scratch and compile Mgetty all over
again! After going through the mgetty log in /tmp I found a BUNCH of
errors. It was trying to init the Bitsurfer as a Fax Modem and also
sending it the additional strings I mentioned above.

The solution was to edit the source file policy.h I changed the init to
the init string I need to MUX the lines with on the Bitsurfer. I turned
all fax capabilities off and set the init speed at 115200 in the policy.h
file. I also added the -D switch to Mgetty in the inittab file.

I did a make, make install, manually copied a few files and shazam! It
works again.
