I'm not an expert on this but I would try the following:

1. Reboot the system and try again.
2. Verify proper termination.  Incorrect termination takes you into The
   Twilight Zone!
3. Try to play music CDs on it, if possible.
4. Assume the cheapo hardware broke and try to get a replacement.
