[ale] Hardware suggestions?

I'm about to add some hardware, funding granted, and need some advice.  
Any recommendations for Linux-Happy items?

I need a sound card (I know, welcome to the 20th century) and a tape 
drive or other backup format.

What do you guys and gals use?
