Thus our Thursday, June 19th, 7:30pm<br \/>\nALE Central meeting is:<br \/>\n<strong> <font size=\"+1\"><br \/>\nBringing Linux to Georgia&#8217;s<br \/>\nSchools and Communities:<br \/>\nAn Update from the Georgia<br \/>\nOpen Source Education Foundation <\/font><\/p>\n<p>with presenter Daniel Howard<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nSynopsis:<br \/>\n   Building on the success of a 7 school Enterprise LTSP pilot project<br \/>\nthat delivered over 2,000 Linux computer systems to Georgia students<br \/>\nlast year, Atlanta Public Schools is expanding their comprehensive<br \/>\nLinux computer program  into at least 30 more schools over the next<br \/>\ntwo years. Now  Dekalb County schools have also begun a Linux<br \/>\nclassroom pilot, while charter schools, community centers, and Boys&#8217;<br \/>\nand Girls&#8217; Clubs all over Atlanta are discovering why Linux is the<br \/>\nsuperior choice for providing reliable, secure, high performance,<br \/>\neducation compatible computing with minimized costs and liabilities.<br \/>\nA great deal of this success is due to the evangelizing, promotion<br \/>\nand support efforts of the Georgia Open Source Education Foundation.<br \/>\nCome get an update on how we&#8217;re helping bring Linux into schools<br \/>\nand communities throughout Georgia one venue at a time, and what<br \/>\na difference it&#8217;s making to students and non-profit organizations in the<br \/>\ngreater Atlanta area.<\/p>\n<p>Bio:<br \/>\n  Daniel Howard is a founder and CEO of GOSEF, a non-profit<br \/>\ngroup dedicated to promoting and sustaining the use of Open<br \/>\nSource Software in public and non-profit institutions through<br \/>\nadvocacy, outreach, support, and recycling of donated hardware.<br \/>\nHe has been a dedicated Linux evangelist and supporter since<br \/>\n2004, when he and William Fragakis established a highly successful<br \/>\ncomputer program at his daughter&#8217;s elementary school by converting<br \/>\naging or dysfunctional Windows classroom PC&#8217;s into Linux thin clients<br \/>\nusing K12LTSP with dozens of Open Source educational applications.<br \/>\nThe substantial improvements in student performance attributed to the<br \/>\nLinux technology at Morris Brandon Elementary convinced<br \/>\nadministrators to install Linux student computers throughout the<br \/>\nAtlanta Public Schools system.<\/p>\n<p>For more background, see the <a href=\" http:\/\/www.gosef.org\">GOSEF.org<\/a> web site.<\/p>\n<p>============================<br \/>\nWe will be meeting in our usual Gambrel Hall room 1C venue.<br \/>\nMeeting time frame is 7:30pm to ~9:30pm<br \/>\nDirections to Emory Law School can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ale.org\/new\/directions-to-ale-central\/ \">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>========<br \/>\nPS: There may be some Linux  \/ ALE related T-Shirts available<br \/>\nat the meeting for a nominal donation that will go to a worthy Open<br \/>\nSource project.
