This is a casual brain storming and volunteer organizing
\nsession to consider a plan for expanding ALE outreach and
\nimproving support for the increasingly diverse groups of
\npeople who are now being introduced to (and liberated by)
\nLinux and Open Source computing.<\/p>\n

Everyone reading this is invited to bring ideas and materials
\naddressing the project goals of building a concise Open Source
\neducational presentation and delivering it to various Atlanta
\narea public venues as detailed in the proposal below.<\/p>\n

PROJECT PROPOSAL:
\n— Given the increasing numbers of successful OSS projects
\nlike Ubuntu, gOS, Firefox, Linspire, OLPC, Open Office,
\nMandriva and EEPC, it is clear that Linux and OSS computing
\nare expanding and gaining greater public acceptance in the
\nconsumer, educational and business market places. To
\nbuild on this momentum and public attention, this seems
\nan especially opportune time for our ALE users group to
\nexpand its outreach and educational efforts to better include
\nand welcome the diverse groups of freedom seekers that are
\nnow settling the Open Source frontier. Toward that goal,
\nI’m inviting participation in a project idea that I’ve
\ntentatively dubbed ALE OSPREX, standing for
\nOpen Source PRomotion and Educational eXchange.<\/p>\n

The vision is to build a pre-packaged, community crafted,
\neasy to deliver 30 to 60 minute presentation targeted at
\nthe general computer user and focused on the numerous
\nadvantages and simplicities of installing and using today’s
\nubiquitous Linux and OSS solutions for common computer
\ntasks. The presentation would be a ready and thorough
\nteaching tool which active OSS advocates could use
\nfor hosting Linux promotional events, educational forums
\nor installation workshops at schools, libraries and other
\npublic venues.<\/p>\n

In combination with the distribution of Live Install CD’s of
\nuser friendly Linux distros at the events, or as an invitation
\nto participate in a Linux installation festival, hosting regular
\nOSPREX presentation events at various locations around
\nAtlanta could quickly expand the base of enlightened Linux
\nand OSS users throughout our region. (e.g., one hope is
\nthat we can arrange 2 or 3 OSPREX events as lead up to
\nthe May 17th Ubuntu\/ALE Install Fest).<\/p>\n

To reach the initial goal the OSPREX project might only
\nrequire the commitment of 2 or 3 motivated OSS evangelists,
\nbut to be truly successful in providing broader public education
\non the value and values of Open Source, I hope that many
\nmore members of this group will want to contribute their time
\nand expertise.<\/p>\n
