{"id":55,"date":"2007-08-09T14:33:05","date_gmt":"2007-08-09T18:33:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ale.org\/new\/2007\/08\/09\/ale-central-mtg-for-thursday-aug-9-2007\/"},"modified":"2007-08-09T14:42:42","modified_gmt":"2007-08-09T18:42:42","slug":"ale-central-mtg-for-thursday-aug-9-2007","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ale.org\/?p=55","title":{"rendered":"ALE Central Mtg. for Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In recognition of California&#8217;s recently released report<br \/>\non their independent testing and successful hacking<br \/>\nof the same zero evidence Diebold computer election<br \/>\nsystems which we are forced vote with here in Georgia&#8230;<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nOur ALE Central Meeting presentation for<br \/>\nThursday, August 9th, 7:30pm will be:<br \/>\n<font size=\"+1\"><br \/>\n&#8220;Invisible Ballots vs Open Voting:<br \/>\nThe Challenge of Exposing Computerized<br \/>\nElection Fraud&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/font><br \/>\na Documentary Screening and Discussion<br \/>\nmoderated by Aaron Ruscetta in association<br \/>\nwith Defenders of Democracy <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Synopsis:<br \/>\n. \u00c2\u00a0 The presentation will use segments from the documentary<br \/>\n&#8220;Invisible Ballots&#8221; as discussion points for the various technical<br \/>\nand ethical concerns surrounding the electronic voting issues.<br \/>\n. \u00c2\u00a0 Special focus will be given to Georgia&#8217;s corrupting influence<br \/>\nas the first State to allow a private corporation to monopolize<br \/>\nits entire public election process using costly, proprietary<br \/>\ncomputer voting systems that, by design, provide no public<br \/>\nmeans of exposing software failures or election fraud.<br \/>\n. \u00c2\u00a0 For contrast and comparison, the presentation will consider<br \/>\nthe options in legitimate and transparent election processes,<br \/>\nexamining the importance of Open Source system software<br \/>\nand the work of the Open Voting Consortium, a group that<br \/>\nhelped motivate the recent University of California &#8220;red team&#8221;<br \/>\ntesting of computer voting systems.<\/p>\n<p>Bio:<br \/>\n. \u00c2\u00a0 Aaron Ruscetta has been a participating member of ALE<br \/>\nsince migrating to the Linux platform in 1999. He regularly<br \/>\ncontributes to the community as an Event Coordinator and<br \/>\nCentral Meeting Moderator. \u00c2\u00a0He has been studying election<br \/>\nsystems and voting rights issues extensively since January,<br \/>\n2003. As a founding member of the Defenders of Democracy<br \/>\nvoter advocacy organization he has presented on the topic of<br \/>\nelectronic voting for various events and for numerous groups<br \/>\nincluding the Atlanta Freethought Society, Electronic Frontiers<br \/>\nGeorgia and the InterZ0ne computer security conference.
