\nSynopsis: <\/strong>
\nAnyone can use Linux systems with a mouse, but the real elegance and power
\nis at the command line. This presentation is designed to ease the transition from
\nmouse monkey marvel to command line commando with a HANDS-ON, follow the
\nexamples session that will mix a bit of fun with the fundamentals; all you’ll need
\nto play along is your laptop. We will be providing copies of the Fedora 20 \/ i386
\nlive DVD to offer a consistent environment, so advance testing of your system
\nwith a recent Fedora Live DVD is recommended. Alternative Linux OS distros will
\nwork as well, but some parts of the class may be rather different, especially for
\nDebian derivatives. No networking will be required and the venue has power plugs
\nat the seats so charged up batteries can be optional.

\nMathematics And Science Center building on the Emory campus,

\nBio: <\/strong>
\nJim Kinney was introduced to Linux in 1993. It became a major distraction in his
\npursuit of a Masters degree of Physics at GSU in 1997. However, it helped with his
\nfirst job at the Emory department of Physics in 1997 where he put students in front
\nof Linux machines and built a loosely coupled cluster of those student machines at
\nthe same time NASA was building the first Beowulf clusters. After Emory, Jim ran
\nheadlong to the darkside of Linux systems and IT support, design and administration.
\nJim founded and ran a consulting firm for 10 years and has worked at places such
\nas Cox Communications, IBM, GaTech Research Institute and Google. Currently, Jim
\nis back at Emory running HPC systems for research needs. In his spare time Jim is a
\nperpetual student of metalworking, beer production and taste testing, martial arts
\nand general physical world hacking. At one point, Jim actually tried to make a policy
\ndifference in education and ran for DeKalb County school board. He lives with wife
\n(MS Geology), son (GT engineer wannabe), 5 cats and an old black lab who won’t
