It became a major distraction in his<br \/>\npursuit of a Masters degree of Physics at GSU in 1997. However, it helped with his<br \/>\nfirst job at the Emory department of Physics in 1997 where he put students in front<br \/>\nof Linux machines and built a loosely coupled cluster of those student machines at<br \/>\nthe same time NASA was building the first Beowulf clusters. After Emory, Jim ran<br \/>\nheadlong to the darkside of Linux systems and IT support, design and administration.<br \/>\nJim founded and ran a consulting firm for 10 years and has worked at places such<br \/>\nas Cox Communications, IBM, GaTech Research Institute and Google. Currently, Jim<br \/>\nis back at Emory running HPC systems for research needs. In his spare time Jim is a<br \/>\nperpetual student of metalworking, beer production and taste testing, martial arts<br \/>\nand general physical world hacking. At one point, Jim actually tried to make a policy<br \/>\ndifference in education and ran for DeKalb County school board. He lives with wife<br \/>\n(MS Geology), son (GT engineer wannabe), 5 cats and an old black lab who won&#8217;t<br \/>\nchase the cats.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The featured presentation at ur ALE Central meeting for 7:30pm on Thursday, Feb. 20th, 2014 will now, thanks to snow and ice days, be the new debut for: A Hands-on Introduction to the Linux Command Line presented by Jim Kinney PLEASE NOTE THE SPECIAL EMORY VENUE DETAILS BELOW!
