The next ALE-NW@SPSU meeting is being held Thursday, January 10th, 2013 at
\n7:30pm in room 266J of the Atrium (J) building on the SPSU campus. This is the
\nsame room as last semester. We will try something new in the format for this meeting:
\na short presentation and a panel discussion.<\/strong><\/p>\n

a) Lightning Talk:
\n“How-To Setup Virtual Machines for Best Performance”<\/span>
\n— This will target non-enterprise systems, suitable for small businesses and home
\nusers. VirtualBox and KVM using virt-manager will included as time permits.
\nPresented by JD.<\/p>\n

b) Discussion: “Linux Desktop Security Techniques”<\/span>
\n— An interactive panel where the following topics will be considered:
\n* email
\n* browser and browser plugins
\n* firewalls
\n* remote access
\n* antivirus
\n* networking
\n* patch management
\n* SELinux and (whatever Ubuntu is pushing)
\n* Anonymous browsing
\n* bittorrenting and Usenet
\n* other topics from the audience<\/p>\n

Orlando Karam and JD\u00c2\u00a0 are the confirmed panelist, but we are hoping for
\nother distinguished guests.<\/p>\n

BIOS:
\nOrlando Karam <\/strong> was born in the US but grew up in Mexico. He got hooked up with
\nUnix while a grad student at Tulane University, and has been running Linux on
\nservers and laptops for more than 15 years. He teaches computer science at
\nSouthern Polytechnic State University, and is starting to use AWS for research
\nand development.<\/p>\n

JD\u00c2\u00a0 <\/strong>has been a Linux user since 1993 on SLS, when you needed to
\nbe A MAN to install it. He’s been using virtual machines since 1989 on MVS,
\nbut started on midrange virtualization in 2000 with VMware Workstation and
\nSun Microsystems Domains. The last 5 years, he has use almost every type of
\nvirtualization available on Linux in production environments (VMware Player,
\nESX, ESXi, Xen, KVM, and VirtualBox). He also enjoys running his main Linux
\ndesktop, a virtual machine, from a private cloud that any computing device
\nsupporting NX clients can access.<\/p>\n
