{"id":29,"date":"2006-11-09T03:53:22","date_gmt":"2006-11-09T07:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ale.org\/new\/?p=29"},"modified":"2006-11-09T04:50:42","modified_gmt":"2006-11-09T08:50:42","slug":"ale-central-mtg-for-november-9-2006","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ale.org\/?p=29","title":{"rendered":"ALE Central Mtg. for November 9, 2006"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\nOur presentation for November 9th will<br \/>\nbe an Encore Video Viewing of<br \/>\n<font size=\"+1\"><br \/>\nLawrence Lessig&#8217;s  &#8220;Creative Commons&#8221;<br \/>\nKeynote Address from Linuxworld, 2006<br \/>\n<\/font> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his keynote from Linuxworld San Francisco,<br \/>\nProfessor Lessig describes what he calls the new<br \/>\nera of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Read\/Write Culture\u00e2\u20ac? that has been revived<br \/>\nby the internet and fueled by Open Source software.<br \/>\nHe talks about the technical, political, and social<br \/>\nchallenges we face in the changing landscape of<br \/>\ncreativity and free expression in the digital age.  <\/p>\n<p>From his background as a lawyer, Lessig&#8217;s presentation<br \/>\naddresses the conflicts between creative freedoms and<br \/>\ncopyright laws, explaining his motivation for extending<br \/>\nthe ideals of the GNU\/Linux Public License into the<br \/>\n &#8220;remix&#8221; and derivative freedoms of Creative Commons<br \/>\nlicensing.<\/p>\n<p>===<br \/>\nBio:<br \/>\nLawrence Lessig is a Professor of Law at Stanford Law<br \/>\nSchool and founder of the school&#8217;s Center for Internet<br \/>\nand Society.  Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, he was<br \/>\nthe Berkman Professor of Law at Harvard Law School,<br \/>\nand a Professor at the University of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Lessig is the author of Free Culture (2004),<br \/>\nThe Future of Ideas (2001) and Code and Other Laws of<br \/>\nCyberspace (1999).   He chairs the Creative Commons<br \/>\nproject, and serves on the board of the Free Software<br \/>\nFoundation, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the<br \/>\nPublic Library of Science, and Public Knowledge.  He is<br \/>\nalso a columnist for Wired magazine.<\/p>\n<p>In the opinion Marc Torres, an ALE founder and attendee<br \/>\nof  Linuxworld 2006:<br \/>\n  &#8220;Lawrence Lessig is one of the most engaging speakers you will<br \/>\never see.
