{"id":267,"date":"2012-06-19T09:09:03","date_gmt":"2012-06-19T13:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ale.org\/?p=267"},"modified":"2012-06-19T09:09:44","modified_gmt":"2012-06-19T13:09:44","slug":"ale-central-mtg-for-thurs-june-21st-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ale.org\/?p=267","title":{"rendered":"ALE CENTRAL MTG. for Thurs., June 21st, 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\nThe feature presentation for our ALE Central Meeting<br \/>\nat 7:30pm on Thursday, June 21st, 2012 will be:<font size=\"+1\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Open Source in Education:<br \/>\nLiberating Students, Teachers, Schools and Budgets<br \/>\nwith Liberated Information Technology&#8221;<\/font><br \/>\n    with Jim Kinney <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Synopsis:<br \/>\n&#8211; This presentation will be a look at tools, techniques and<br \/>\nphilosophies from the communities of Free Liberated Open<br \/>\nSource technology that should be integrated RIGHT NOW<br \/>\nin K12 schools.<br \/>\n&#8211; Discussions will include a look at elements of the Open<br \/>\nSource universe that are an obvious and natural fit with the<br \/>\nfunctions and concerns of K12 education.  Some specific<br \/>\nsoftware and configuration techniques will be discussed,<br \/>\nalong with the benefits of integrating key concepts from<br \/>\nOpen Source communities into the daily working process<br \/>\nof K12 schools and related IT practices.<\/p>\n<p>Bio:<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u201c James (Jim) Kinney became a zealous fan of Linux and<br \/>\nLiberated Open Source Software the first time he saw a<br \/>\ndiscarded Next Cube running Slackware in 1992.  In the<br \/>\n20 years since his introduction to Linux &#038; FLOSS goodness,<br \/>\nJames transformed his obsession into a career. First at Emory<br \/>\nUniversity where he taught physics, converted their computer<br \/>\nlab to Linux and helped co-found LUGE, the Linux Users Group<br \/>\nof Emory. Next followed a 10+ year stint as an entrepreneur<br \/>\nLinux &#038; Open Source consultant.
